On Aug. 30, an officer of the Athens Borough Police Department arrested 49-year-old Steven L. Wheeler of Sayre, for multiple offenses related to driving while intoxicated.

The officer observed Wheeler cross the center line of North Elmira Street and then drive into a lawn on West Pine Street while out on patrol and subsequently initiated a traffic stop.

Wheeler was asked to perform a series of standard field sobriety tests, which were met with unsteady performance. Wheeler was placed under arrest and charged with DUI: general impairment; DUI: highest rate of alcohol; careless driving; and failure to keep right.

He will answer these charges in front of Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw at a preliminary hearing scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 10.

DUI arrest made

On Aug. 29, an officer of the Athens Township Police was stopped momentarily at the Dandy Mini Mart in Greens Landing when he observed a vehicle traveling south on 220. The vehicle was seen crossing the fog line and then turning onto Wolcott Hollow Road where it veered across the double yellow line. The vehicle traveled on the wrong side of the roadway for a short distance. As the vehicle returned to the correct lane, it began to speed up, at which time the officer activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop.

The officer identified the driver as Timothy A. Glisson Jr., 20, of Towanda, and observed him to have glassy, watery eyes and to be quite lethargic. Glisson was asked to perform several field sobriety tests, which he failed.

Man charged with aggravated assault

On Friday Sept. 12, Sayre Borough Police officers responded to a call for an open 911 call. Officers and Bradford County dispatchers could hear noticeable screaming on the line. While en route, the dispatcher informed the officers that a man has snapped a woman's neck.

Upon arrival, George A. Marriott, 33 of Sayre, was found sitting on the front steps of the property, while the victim was inside laying face up on the couch, in obvious pain. She clutched her throat and informed the officer that Marriott had struck her multiple times with a closed fist following an argument. He then allegedly "body slammed" her into the couch and climbed on top of her. At this time he began twisting her head and neck before releasing her, only to choke her with both hands around her neck.

The victim stated she heard her neck crack at this time and feared that Marriott had broken her neck. She stated to officers that she was unsure if she had passed out, but remembers struggling for air.

Marriott was forced off of the victim by individuals on scene and she was later transported to Robert Packer Hospital via ambulance.

George A. Marriott was arrested and charged with aggravated assault; simple assault; recklessly endangering another person and harassment: subject other to physical contact. He was arraigned on Sept. 12 and was remanded to the Bradford County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 bail. He will be formally arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 27.

Man barricades himself in Sayre residence

On Sept. 9, police officers with the Sayre Borough, Athens Borough and Athens Township police departments assisted at the scene of a man refusing to allow entry to his Sayre residence and threatening to commit suicide. Officers later identified the man as 47-year-old Joseph D. Goodman Jr.

Officers arriving on scene were only able to talk to Goodman through an open window in his upstairs apartment and learned he had cut himself with a knife an least once. He advised officers that he was not coming out and that he planned to kill himself. He then smashed the windows with his hands and tossed the glass down toward officers. He also threw beer bottles and a "lit bottle rocket" out of the smashed window at the officers.

The officers tried for two hours to convince Goodman to leave the residence, but then decided to force entry into the apartment. Upon forcing their way into the residence, officers stumbled over two chairs, a table and an electric cord which Goodman had used to barricade himself in the apartment. A second group of officers came in through a rear window of the apartment.

Once inside, Goodman was located in the bedroom and asked to show his hands to surrender. He refused and was combative with officers which resulted in Goodman being subdued with a taser. He was then secured and transported to the Robert Packer Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

An officer with the Sayre Borough Police Department reported the finding of a tin containing marijuana and three pipes containing marijuana residue.

Goodman was arrested and charged with a total of 14 charges including: nine counts of simple assault; resisting arrest; two counts of criminal mischief; disorderly conduct; and the use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

He faced Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw for a preliminary arraignment and was remanded to the Bradford County Correctional Facility in lieu of bail.

He will appear again before District Judge Shaw for his preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 14.
