DUI crash leads to drug arrest

On Nov. 8, Athens Township Police arrested 34-year-old Dustin J. Platt of Milan, for several offenses related to striking a tree while driving under the influence of narcotics.

Officers were responding to a call regarding a truck striking a tree on McKinney Hill Road and found Platt still in the vehicle. His appearance was consistent with someone under the influence, noted the officer, with blood shot eyes, sweaty appearance, constricted pupils and general drowsy manner.

Platt advised officers he was not under the influence of any substance and agreed to perform the standard battery of field sobriety tests, which he failed to perform in a satisfactory manner. A search warrant for Platt's vehicle allowed officers to uncover several items related to ingesting a narcotic substance.

Platt was subsequently arrested and charged with DUI: controlled substance; possession of drug paraphernalia; possession of a controlled substance; and driving on right side of the roadway. He is set to face these charges at a preliminary hearing on Jan. 16 with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw.

On Dec. 3, Sayre Borough Police officers responded to a motor vehicle accident on West Lockhart Street in Sayre. Upon arrival, they found 27-year-old Whitney E. Kipling of Athens, entrapped in her vehicle which had rolled over onto its roof. The officer noted the music inside the vehicle was extremely loud and Kipling could not hear his directions to her. She was quickly extracted from her vehicle by the officer who immediately detected an odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from her person.

Upon the subsequent investigation of the incident, the officers deducted that Kipling was traveling west on West Lockhart Street and struck a legally parked vehicle near the corner of Stedman Street. Kipling's vehicle then overturned.

At the collection of Kipling's blood sample at the Robert Packer Hospital, she was found with a blood alcohol content nearly three times the legal limit at .22 percent.

She was charged with careless driving, DUI: highest rate of alcohol, DUI: general impairment, and reckless driving. She is set to face these charges at a preliminary hearing with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw on Jan. 16.

Brown IV, of Athens, driving erratically in the area near the Sayre Post Office on Desmond Street on Nov. 22. During their subsequent traffic stop, officers observed Brown with slurred speech and blood shot eyes. He also had an odor of alcohol on his breath.

Officers were soon advised by dispatch that Brown also had an active warrant for his arrest issued by the Bradford County Court of Common Pleas. Because of a recent gunshot wound to his leg, Brown was not asked to perform any sobriety tests, but later consented to a blood draw.

Brown was charged with DUI: highest rate of alcohol, driving on right side of the roadway, and failure to use a turn signal. He is set to answer to these charges at a preliminary hearing with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw on Jan. 16.

The officer then asked Sidonio to perform field sobriety tests and he responded that he didn't need to, he was drunk. The officer insisted and Sidonio failed all three tests administered.

Sidonio was charged with DUI: general impairment, DUI: highest rate of alcohol, driving on roadway lined for traffic. He is set to answer to these charges at a preliminary hearing with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw on Jan. 2.
