Triad S.A.L.T. Council meeting

PETERSBURG - City of Petersburg Sheriff, Vanessa R. Crawford extends to the citizens of Petersburg, an invitation to attend our monthly Triad S.A.L.T. Council meeting on Thursday, April 25, at 2 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 2223 S. Crater Road. Our guest presenters are Antoinette Ayers from the VCU Massey center and Natalie Pennywell from the Crater Health District. Their topic will be the New Healthy Living and Learning Center Program.

The Petersburg Healthy Living and Learning Center at the Petersburg Central Library is a partnership between the Library, Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Center and Crater Health District. The center will present information on a variety of health topics and local health resources allowing the senior citizens to choose information from videos, visual charts, and books. The center is designed to empower the community to be pro-active by increasing their health literacy awareness.

We will have trained librarians and health education specialists from both VCU Massey Cancer Center and the Crater Health District to share and demonstrate how to use the information. The program intent is not to offer health advice, but to help Petersburg residents find information regarding their health concerns and connect them to health resources within the community, such as support groups.

Triad S.A.L.T. Councils (Seniors And Law Enforcement Together) are busy year-round, building crime-fighting relationships between older citizens and their local law enforcement representatives. They are discovering new ways of enhancing the lives of those who have already given much to help their children and grandchildren grow and prosper.

Bring a friend and join us in helping to continue to provide resources for our senior citizens in helping them to stay safe and healthy.

For further information, contact Sheriff Vanessa R. Crawford at 733-2369 at the Petersburg Sheriff's Office.

Towanda man faces gun charge

Tracy Lee Vanderpool, 57, of Towanda has been charged with the second-degree felony of persons not to possess firearms, police said.

The charge stems from an incident that occurred on Oct. 7, when Vanderpool contacted the state police to report that 23 rifles and shotguns had been stolen from his residence, police said.

The state police said they located the guns, and, while in the process of returning them to Vanderpool, determined that Vanderpool had pled guilty to a first-degree felony charge of burglary in 1975.

Because Vanderpool was convicted of the burglary charge, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm, police said.

Vanderpool told the state police that he was unaware that it was unlawful for him to possess a firearm, according to a criminal complaint that the state police filed against Vanderpool in Towanda District Court.

Vanderpool told police that if he knew he was doing something illegal, he would have never reported the guns stolen, the complaint states.

Man pleads guilty to disorderly conduct in Towanda

Ronald McClure Jr., 24, of Ithaca, N.Y., recently pled guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct after causing a disruption in Bradford County Court on March 25, court records show.

At the time, McClure was in the courtroom in relation to a bench warrant that had been issued against him, according to the Bradford County Sheriff's Office.

McClure yelled in the courtroom, refused to obey orders from the sheriff's deputies, and tried to break away from sheriff's deputies a number of times to move toward his family, according to a criminal complaint that the sheriff's office had filed against McClure in Towanda District Court.

McClure was sentenced to 20 days in the Bradford County jail on the disorderly conduct charge, according to the Towanda District Court.

The following people were recently charged with driving under the influence in Bradford County:

-- Larry Richard Baker Jr., 22, of Towanda, by the state police, on Feb. 28 on Airport Road in Towanda Township. A blood test revealed that Baker's blood alcohol content was .180 percent on the day of his arrest. Baker, who lives on French Asylum Road, has been sent a summons which orders him to appear in Towanda District Court on May 8 for a preliminary hearing.

-- Laura Elizabeth Dinelli, 20, of Towanda, by the state police, on March 29, on Main Street in Towanda Borough. Dinelli was also cited for disorderly conduct and obedience to traffic-control devices. During the incident, Dinelli exhibited signs of alcohol intoxication.
