Women charged with retail theft

An Athens woman and a Sayre woman face preliminary hearings before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy on charges of retail theft for the theft of $52.45 in gas at Woody's Country Store Oct. 8 in South Creek Township, according to court papers.

According to affidavits, Jody Ann Raymond, 52, of 2420 Pennsylvania Ave., Sayre, was charged with a second degree misdemeanor charge of retail theft, due to one prior conviction of retail theft, and Carole Diane Hobday, 53, of 361 McCloe Ln., Athens, was charged with a third degree felony of retail theft, due to three prior convictions of retail theft.

According to Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Michael Mislevy, Hobday said she remembered that Raymond was driving. Hobday said she got out of the car to pump the gas, and that Raymond got out of the vehicle and went into the store, so she thought Raymond had paid. Raymond said that she didn't remember being with Hobday during the incident.

Wilcox said Raymond was sent a summons, and Hobday's unsecure bail was set at $45,000.

Domestic assault

SHAMOKIN - A 20-year-old Shamokin man remained jailed Monday in Northumberland County Prison, Sunbury, after he allegedly punched a woman inside his home Saturday night.

Glen Alan Shurock Jr., of 15 N. Diamond St., was engaged in a domestic dispute with the woman between 10 and 11:30 p.m. Saturday when he allegedly grabbed her, smacked her in the face and then punched her in the eye, according to court papers.

The woman suffered swelling and discoloration to her left eye. She told police she was holding a baby at the time of the alleged assault.

Shurock is charged by Cpl. Jarrod Scandle with misdemeanors of simple assault and harassment and a summary count of underage drinking.

He was arraigned at 1:45 a.m. Sunday by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III and jailed on $15,000 straight bail. A preliminary hearing is set for May 28.

Patrolman Scott Weaver assisted at the scene.

Burglary charge

SHAMOKIN - A 19-year-old Trevorton man is accused of robbing and ransacking a city home overnight Saturday.

Tyler Smith, of 421 W. Market St., was arrested on a felony burglary charge hours after he was cited by city police with retail theft in an unrelated incident.

Police say Smith confessed to breaking into Eric Ginck's home at 108 Elm St., gaining access to a window by standing on an orange container atop a blue barrel. Once inside, he allegedly ransacked the house, causing thousands of dollars in damage before leaving with a TV and a portable DVD player.

Smith told police he took the TV to a local pawn shop after hours, and in attempting to leave it behind on a dresser outside the shop, it fell to the ground and smashed, according to court papers. The DVD player was found inside his backpack after he fled the scene of a disturbance Saturday at 10 N. Seventh St. Officers eventually made contact with Smith and took him into custody at 1782 Wabash St., Coal Township.

Smith is charged by Cpl. Jarrod Scandle with felony burglary and misdemeanor loitering and prowling at night. He was arraigned at 1:45 a.m. Sunday by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III. He remained in Northumberland County Prison on Monday in lieu of $12,000 straight bail.

A preliminary hearing is set for May 28.

In the unrelated incident, Smith is accused by Scandle of stealing three cans of beef jerky and one pack of Slim Jims from the Lincoln Street Turkey Hill about 12:37 a.m. Saturday.

The victim told police she and Delbo were outdoors when he struck her in the face after 11 p.m. and then fled the scene. She fled, too, and sought treatment at Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital. She said she suffered a broken nose and reported the alleged assault the next day.

Delbo was arraigned at 10 a.m. Monday by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III and was released on $10,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing is set for May 28.

Resisting arrest

ASHLAND - A borough man was tasered by police following a domestic incident at 930 Middle St. at 8:05 a.m. Monday.

Borough police Patrolman Mark O'Hearn said officers were called to the scene earlier for a disturbance between William Smith, 31, of 930 Middle St., Ashland, and Paula Schistel. Smith fled the scene before police arrived and the authorities searched the area because Smith reportedly had a knife.

Smith was found hiding a block away under a porch, but fled when spotted by police. He returned to his home and tried to escape from a second-story porch, but was held by his waist by Lt. Dan Holderman of the Butler Township Police. Smith fought with police in an attempt to escape down a stairwell, police said, but was tasered and taken into custody.

Smith was charged with resisting arrest, flight to avoid apprehension, persistent disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. The charges were filed with Magisterial District Judge Christina Hale of Frackville. Schistel was not charged in the incident but was taken into custody on an outstanding bench warrant and committed to Schuylkill County Prison by Butler Township Police.

Borough officers were assisted at the scene by officers of the Butler Township and Girardville Police departments.
