No injuries reported

State police at Mansfield said Brian D. May, 49, of Canton, was not injured in a one-vehicle crash at 5:30 a.m. Feb. 6 in Union Township, Tioga County, Pa.

According to police, he was traveling west on Back Road too fast for the snow-covered road, as he approached a left curve. He failed to negotiate the left curve and his Chrysler Town and Country went off the northern part of the roadway, at the apex of the curve. It traveled through about 15 feet of snow that was 12-14 inches deep, and struck a tree, with the front bumper/grill area. The vehicle had significant damage, with the tree buried about 24 inches into the front bumper/hood area. Police said May fled the scene and he will be cited for various traffic violations in District Court 04-3-03.

Canton Auto Body assisted on the scene.

Police said he was traveling south in his Ford Focus, and lost control of the vehicle on the snow/slush-covered roadway. It slid off the roadway via the west berm, slid down a small embankment and rolled over onto its roof. Police said the vehicle came to rest on its roof, approximately 30 feet east of the roadway.

Police said Person was charged for a violation of "driving at safe speed" and it was "very apparent" that he was traveling too fast for conditions.

Man not injured

State police at Towanda said Glen T. Reese, Jr., 21, of Columbia Cross Roads, was not injured in a one-vehicle crash at 2:20 a.m. late last month on Main Street in Sylvania.

Police said he was traveling eastbound along Route 6 when he allowed his vehicle, a Mitsubishi Eclipse, to veer to the left, across both lanes of travel. It then made impact with a parked vehicle, a Jeep Liberty, along the northside berm, causing the vehicle to travel northeast into a house porch area. Police said the impact with the porch damaged the house. Reese continued to the east across the intersection with Iron Mine Road, where his vehicle came to final rest along the northside berm of Route 6, east of the intersection. Police said he is being charged with traffic violations.

An affidavit notes that a BCCF officer confronted Bump about being extremely loud and disrespectful, and Bump began yelling obscenities toward the officer. At approximately 11:50 a.m., Bump began urinating out of his cell door and spitting out of his door. He then began to throw unknown liquids toward the officers and continued to spit in the direction of the officers.

In addition, Bump is charged with criminal mischief for damaging a cell door, shackles, and handcuffs at the jail, according to court papers.

An affidavit notes that it was reported that on Jan. 2, Bump was in a holding cell area because he was threatening to strike another inmate. While in the holding cell area, he began to kick the cell door, damaging it. BCCF officers then confronted him and the officers secured him and placed him in a restraint chair. Former prosecutor named head of Lackawanna College Police Academy

0
0

For 19 years, Maryann Grippo prosecuted cases of arson, murder and child abuse, working alongside police officers. She will now be training them.

The former Lackawanna County deputy district attorney is the new director of the Lackawanna College Police Academy. She is the first woman to hold the position in the academy's 38-year history.

"Police and prosecutors are all on the same page ... to ensure people are protected and criminals are prosecuted," she said Monday in her new office.

Grippo, 47, replaces Dan Duffy, who became a Wilkes-Barre police officer earlier this month. He had been the academy's director since July 2012, when he resigned his job as Scranton's police chief. He will stay active with the academy, serving as an associate director of professional standards, Grippo said.

In her nearly two decades as a prosecutor, Grippo spent time as head of the homicide by vehicle and special victims units.

In 2012, seeking to get herself out of her "comfort zone" and try something new, Grippo joined the law firm of O'Malley and Langan, where she represented plaintiffs in personal injury and workers' compensation cases. She also became an instructor at the police academy.

She quickly started to become more involved with the academy and became the site coordinator in November.

"It was here that I felt I was where I was supposed to be," she said. "It's one of those things that when it comes along, you know it's right."

Working with officers on investigations, Grippo said she had tremendous respect for their work and learned the value of strong training. She officially started as director last week.

"Once you've been in public service ... you just need to keep doing that," she said. "There's something that is just so rewarding about it that it's hard to let go of that."

As director, Grippo's goals include preparing cadets to do their jobs with honesty and integrity.

"You should never be empowered by your badge," Grippo tells the cadets. "You should be humbled by its power."

Grippo also wants to make sure cadets have access to the latest training and to increase community involvement, including by developing a mascot that could visit schools with cadets and to offer safety classes, such as CPR or home protection, to the public. She also hopes to grow enrollment in the academy, which now has about 100 cadets in its Scranton and Hazleton classrooms.

College officials said Grippo's background and experience will benefit the cadets in the academy.

"Her hard-nosed approach, balanced with a strong desire to ensure our graduates are the very best municipal police officers in the Commonwealth, makes her the perfect choice to lead our academy into the future," college President Mark Volk said.
