Hopewell Crime for March 2

The following information was provided by the Hopewell Police Department.

- Arson: At 2:22 p.m. Feb. 19, while in police custody at 300 N. Main St. for another incident, known offender attempted to set fire to items in the holding sell.

- Burglary/Breaking and Entering/Residential: At 4:11 p.m. Feb. 28, police responded to the 400 block of S. 21st Ave. for a reported burglary. Known offender entered residence by kicking front door and stole headphones, game system, games and accessories. Headphones and game system later recovered and offender arrested.

- Burglary/Breaking and Entering/Residential: At 3 p.m. Feb. 18, police responded to the 1600 block of Tabb Ave. for a reported burglary. Unknown offender entered residence by breaking rear window and stole TV, laptop and clothing.

- Burglary/Breaking and Entering/Residential: At 3:54 p.m. Feb. 20, police responded to the 1000 block of Burnside Drive for a reported burglary. Unknown offender entered residence via basement window and stole TV and game system.

- Counterfeiting/Forgery: At 10:43 a.m. Feb. 18, police responded to headquarters for a reported check forgery. Known offender cashed a stolen and forged check.

- Counterfeiting/Forgery; At 3:54 p.m. Feb. 19, police responded to the 700 block of City Point Road for a reported fraud. Known offender cashed stolen checks.

- Drug/Narcotic Violation: At 5:07 p.m. Feb. 17, police performed a traffic stop in the 600 block of W. Randolph Road. Narcotics were found during the stop and the driver was arrested.

- Drug/Narcotic Violation: At 11:01 p.m. Feb. 17, police arrested a subject in the 1500 block of Piper Square for drug possession.

- Larceny/Theft of Motor Vehicle Parts/Accessories: At 12 p.m. Feb. 21, police responded to the 3900 block of Oaklawn Blvd. for a reported larceny. Unknown offender stole vehicle tags.

- Larceny-All Other Larceny: At 8 a.m. Feb. 17, police responded to the 400 block of S. Mesa Drive for a reported larceny. Known offender stole headquarters, which were later recovered.

- Larceny-All Other Larceny: At 11 a.m. Feb. 19, police responded to the 200 block of Woodbine St. for a reported larceny. Unknown offender stole ladder from outside of a residence.

- Larceny-All Other Larceny: At 8:52 a.m. Feb. 19, police responded to the 100 block of S. 12th Ave. for a reported vandalism. Known offenders stole fire extinguishers from buses and sprayed vehicles, which were not damaged. Petitions pending.

- Larceny-All Other Larceny: At 4 p.m. Feb. 21, police responded to the 1100 block of N. 2nd Ave. for a reported larceny. Unknown offender stole bicycle from the rear yard of a residence.

- Larceny-All Other Larceny: At 8 p.m. Feb. 22, police responded to the headquarters in reference to a larceny that occurred in the 100 block of Cavalier Square. Unknown offender stole an I-Pod from a business restroom.

- Larceny-Shoplifting: At 12:58 a.m. Feb. 17, police responded to the 2300 block of Oaklawn Blvd. in reference to a larceny. Unknown offender stole DVDs from a business.

- Larceny-Shoplifting: At 12:08 p.m. Feb. 17, police responded to the 2300 block of Oaklawn Blvd. in reference to a larceny. Unknown offender stole DVDs from a business on Jan. 11.

- Larceny-Theft From Building: At 12:30 a.m. Feb. 22, police responded to the 400 block of N. Main St. for a reported larceny. Unknown offender stole sound equipment.

- Larceny-Theft From Building: At 10:30 a.m. Feb. 22, police responded to headquarters in reference to a domestic assault that occurred in the 800 block of Perrymont Road. Known offender assaulted victim by slapping and stole ID, cash and debit cards from purse. Offender arrested.

- Vandalism/Damage/Destruction of Property: At 12 p.m. Feb. 17, police responded to the 2600 block of Wise St. for a reported burglary. Known offender trespassed and broke a window at a residence.

- Vandalism/Damage/Destruction of Property: At 9:15 a.m. police responded to the 700 block of Collindale Road for a reported assault and vandalism. Known offenders assaulted victim, damaged vehicle and were arrested.

- Vandalism/Damage/Destruction of Property: At 4 a.m. Feb. 23, police responded to the 1600 block of City Point Road for a reported vandalism. Unknown offender threw a brick and broke a door window.

- Vandalism/Damage/Destruction of Property: at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 23, police were called to the 200 block of N. 16th Ave. for a reported vandalism. Known offender cut vehicle tires.

- Weapon Law Offenses: At 12:20 p.m. Feb. 19, police responded to the 400 block of S. Mesa Drive for a reported weapons violation. Known offender was found in possession of brass knuckles. Petitions pending.

- Weapon Law Offenses: At 11:06 p.m. Feb. 29, police responded to the 300 block of City Point Road for a reported disturbance. Known offender brandished a weapon at the victim and was later arrested.

Barton man charged

A Barton, N.Y. man was recently arrested for aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle by Tioga County, N.Y. sheriff's deputies.

William W. Porter, 31, was also charged with speeding and failure to change address, according to information from the sheriff's office. Porter was charged following a vehicle stop on Route 17C in Barton, police said.

Porter was issued tickets to appear March 11 in Barton Town Court.

Two charged with retail theft

Two Milan residents were recently charged with retail theft by Athens Township police.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Kathy Jo Anthony, 43, and Joshua Lee Anthony, 24, were charged following a Feb. 24 incident at the Walmart store on Elmira Street. Police also charged Joshua Anthony with receiving stolen property.

Police said the pair attempted to remove $225.48 worth of items from the store, including baby clothes and a high chair.

Kathy and Joshua Anthony are both scheduled to appear in district court March 25 for preliminary hearings.

Marijuana possession charge

A Van Etten, N.Y. man was recently charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana by Athens Township police.

According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, David Joseph English, 26, was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said English was charged after being found passed out in his vehicle Feb. 26 in an Elmira Street parking lot. Police said English was reported to have a lighter in one hand and a glass pipe used to smoke marijuana in the other. Police found a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle, police said.

English's preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 25.

Woman charged with theft

A Sayre woman was recently charged with retail theft by Athens Township police.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Bobbi Jo Rockwell, 35, attempted to remove $74.49 in clothing and food items Feb. 26 from the Walmart store on Elmira Street.

Rockwell's preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 25.

Public drunkenness

ROCKEFELLER TOWNSHIP - Daniel S. Borges, 25, of 234 Church St., Sunbury was cited by state police at Stonington with public drunkenness after being found walking in the area of Route 61 near Klinger Road, in Rockefeller Township.

Police reported that Borges was allegedly under the influence of alcohol to a degree that placed him in danger. The citation was filed with Magisterial District Judge Benjamin Apfelbaum, of Sunbury.

Sobriety checkpoint scheduled

STONINGTON - During the month of March, State Troopers from the Stonington barracks will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint along a state or local highway in Northumberland County.

The checkpoint is part of a statewide DUI Checkpoint strike force initiative, and will involve briefly checking vehicles for operators who are impaired by alcohol and/or controlled substances.

No injuries reported

No one was injured in a one-vehicle accident at 11:35 p.m. Feb. 21 on Route 414, one-half mile east of Dump Road, in Franklin Township, said state police at Towanda.

Police said Sarah Amber Lyon, 23, of Williamsport, who was not injured, was traveling east and lost control of her 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer after encountering an ice patch/black ice on the road. Her vehicle went off the south shoulder of the road, over a slight embankment, and struck several trees with its front-end area. Two passengers in her vehicle, Kenneth Darrell Skinner, 28, of Williamsport, and a 2-year-old Williamsport male, were in her vehicle and not injured.

According to police, a charge for a violation of "driving vehicle at safe speed" was filed against Lyon through District Court 42-3-03. The vehicle had disabling damage and was towed from the scene. The Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department and Junior's Towing assisted at the scene.

Public drunkenness

WEST BUFFALO TOWNSHIP - Melissa Lea Heimbach, 35, of Sunbury, was charged by state police at Milton with public drunkenness after she was found walking down the middle of Forest Hill Road at 7:15 a.m. Sunday.

Car hits cow

ROCKEFELLER TOWNSHIP - Daniel R. Jones, 18, of Ashland, and a 15-year-old female from Paxinos escaped injury Sunday night when the vehicle Jones was driving struck a cow on Plum Creek Road near Klinger Road.

State police at Stonington reported Jones was driving a 2010 Toyota Tundra east at 7 p.m. when he crested a hill on Plum Creek Road and was unable to avoid striking a cow on the road. Jones was able to steer his disabled vehicle onto the north berm after the accident. The cow walked away from the scene, police said.

Fight

RANSHAW - Charges of simple assault and harassment were filed by Coal Township police against two Ranshaw brothers relating to a fight shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday at their house.

Police said Thomas Madden Jr., 50, and Richard Madden, 49, of 417 Main St., had an argument which turned physical and involved an oxygen tank. Both brothers suffered head injuries after being hit by or hitting the oxygen tank.

Richard Madden was transported by AREA Services Ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, where he was treated and released. His brother was taken by AREA Services Ambulance to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital, where he also was treated and released.

The brothers were arraigned by on-call Magisterial District Judge Benjamin Apfelbaum of Sunbury and released on $5,000 ROR bail.

Equipment stolen

ASHLAND - Borough police are investigating a theft of a Case brand backhoe bucket, approximately 12 inches in width. The bucket was stolen from outside the Ashland Borough Garage sometime between Feb. 21 and 24.

Barton man arrested

A Barton, N.Y. man was recently incarcerated by Athens Township police and charged with two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Arthur George Bidlack, 39, was also charged with one count each of retail theft, tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and public drunkenness.

Police said Bidlack was reported to be acting suspiciously at about 4:34 a.m. Feb. 13 at the Dandy Mini Mart on Elmira Street. Store employees told police Bidlack had taken several snack items from the store, police said. The total value of the items was $4.93.

When police responded to the store, Bidlack told employees he had warrants for his arrest and entered the men's bathroom, locking the door, police said.

Police found a pellet gun, knife and hookah with a liquid inside it, which Bidlack told police was bath salts, in Bidlack's backpack, according to police. Police also found an eyeglass case containing several hypodermic syringes in a trash can in the bathroom; Bidlack admitted to throwing out the case while inside the bathroom, police said.

Bidlack was arraigned March 3 and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. Bidlack's preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 11.

Man charged with disorderly conduct

A Sayre man was recently incarcerated by borough police on a charge of disorderly conduct.

According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Trey A. Ellers, 30, was also charged with public drunkenness.

Police said officers responded at about 9:24 p.m. Feb. 28 to a report of a man with a shotgun in the middle of Stedman Street, later identified as Ellers. Police said officers found Ellers sitting on his front porch with a 12-pack of beer and a shotgun lying next to him. Officers took Ellers into custody at gunpoint, police said. The shotgun was later found to be unloaded, police said. Officers found a semi-automatic 9mm and a .40 caliber handgun and several rounds of ammunition in Ellers' house, which were placed into evidence, police said.

Ellers was arraigned Feb. 28 and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail. Ellers' preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 11.

Criminal mischief occurs in Dushore

A case of criminal mischief has occurred on Turnpike Street in Dushore, Sullivan County, police said.

The case involves one or more people, who damaged an exterior storm door of a building, police said.

The building is owned by Wayne Roucken of Dushore, police said.

The incident occurred sometime between 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 19 and 3 a.m. on Feb. 20, state police said.

Vehicle strikes utility pole in Wysox Twp.

No one was injured in a motor vehicle accident on U.S. Route 6 in Wysox Township, police said.

The accident occurred when 55-year-old Emery F. Johnson of Laceyville, who was driving west on Route 6, lost control of his vehicle, police said.

The vehicle traveled off the south side of the roadway and struck a utility pole, state police said.

The accident occurred at 8:04 a.m. on Feb. 22 at the intersection with Craftmaster Road, state police at Towanda said.

Accident occurs in Towanda Township

No one was injured in an accident that occurred on U.S. Route 220 in Towanda Township, police said.

The accident occurred at 1:20 p.m. on Feb. 20 as Emily L. Schrimp of Monroeton and Patricia J. Shumway of Monroeton were both driving south on Route 220, police said.

A vehicle in front of Shumway's 2001 Ford Escape slowed down to make a turn off the roadway, police said.

Shumway, 50, applied the brakes to slow down, police said.

Schrimp, 19, was unable to stop before her vehicle struck the rear end area of Shumway's vehicle, police said.

The accident occurred a half-mile south of Patton Hill Road, state police said.

Schrimp was ticketed for driving at an unsafe speed, state police at Towanda said.

No charges were filed against Shumway, police said.

DUI charges

The following people were recently charged with driving under the influence in Bradford County:

Suddenly May Wadlington, 39, of Towanda, by the state police, on Feb. 16, on U.S. Route 220 in North Towanda Township. A test revealed that Wadlington had a blood alcohol content of .146 percent on the day of her arrest.

Paul H. Arnold, 55, of Sayre, by Athens Township police, on March 2, on Sayre Hill Road in Athens Township. Arnold has also been charged with operating a vehicle without a properly working rear light, failure to keep right, careless driving and speeding. Police said Arnold performed poorly on a field sobriety test and consented to a blood alcohol test to determine his blood alcohol content. Arnold was arraigned March 2 and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. Arnold's preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 11.

PFA violation

MOUNT CARMEL - Adam M. Hendricks, 34, of 223 East Ave., Mount Carmel, was charged by Cpl. David Donkochik with violating a protection from abuse order filed against him by his live-in girlfriend, Debra Palestis.

Police reported Hendricks is accused of attempting to stop Palestis from leaving their home in a car and trying to slash the tires on her vehicle with a knife at 9:22 p.m. Friday.

Hendricks and Palestis told police the defendant has been living at 223 East Ave. in violation of the PFA order.

Multiple charges

RIVERSIDE - Joshua Seth Kovaschetz, 34, of 2273 Mile Hill Road, P.O. Box 301, Sunbury, was charged by Trooper Justin Rosboschil with hit and run, following a vehicle too closely, careless driving, failure to provide immediate notice of an accident to police and operating a vehicle without an official certificate of inspection.

The charges were filed in connection with a Feb. 7 two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Sunbury and Whiteknight roads in Riverside.

Public nuisance

SHAMOKIN - Adam Brooks, 47, of 821 Mount Carmel St., Shamokin, was charged by Cpl. Bryan Primerano with causing a public nuisance by violating code and public safety ordinances at his home Feb. 23.

According to a criminal complaint filed at the office of Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III, the south porch floor and roof at the property have or are in danger of collapsing. Police said there is no railing on the front porch and the chimney is damaged and in danger of collapsing. Police reported the siding/shingles on the building are detached and falling and there is broken glass inside the structure. Police said the building is exposed which allows animals easy access and high weeds are present on the property and porch area. A brick wall on the south side of the building facing Sunbury Street is damaged and in danger of collapsing.

DUI

SHAMOKIN - Loriann M. Gula, 46, of 268 Colonial Ave., Natalie, was charged by Cpl. Jarrod Scandle with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, careless driving and stop sign violation involving a Nov. 23 two-vehicle accident at Liberty and Water streets.

Police reported Gula had a blood-alcohol content of .17 percent.

Drug paraphernalia

SHAMOKIN - Brandon M. Garancheski, 20, of 310 N. Shamokin St., Shamokin, was charged by Cpl. Bryan Primerano with possession of drug paraphernalia and underage drinking involving a Feb. 25 incident at his residence.

Police found empty Suboxone packets, syringes and Captain Morgan spiced rum in Garancheski's possession.

Theft of leased property

COAL TOWNSHIP - Patrolman Terry Ketchem has filed a charge of theft by deception against David T. Miller III, 42, of 21 N. Anthracite St., Shamokin.

Police reported Miller failed to make any payments on a 46-inch Toshiba LCD television valued at $1,021.64 he leased from Lightning Rent To Own in the Anthra Plaza on June 24.

Resisting arrest

SHAMOKIN - Patrolman William Zalinski has charged Joshua L. Scandle, 34, of Shamokin, who is currently an inmate at Northumberland County Prison in Sunbury, with resisting arrest, possession of a packet of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The charges were filed in connection with a Feb. 14 incident at Arch and Third streets in which Scandle attempted to flee police on foot and had to be wrestled to the ground by officers. In addition to the packet of heroin, police said Scandle was found in possession of several empty heroin wrappers and hypodermic needles.

DUI charges

The following people were recently charged with driving while under the influence in Bradford County:

Joshua Daniel Pond, 27, of Sayre, by Athens Township police, on Feb. 26, at Pennsylvania Avenue and Bressler Street in Athens Township. Pond has also been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, failure to give information and render aid, failure to make immediate notice of an accident to police, failure to keep right and careless driving. A blood alcohol test revealed that Pond's blood alcohol content was .17 percent on the day of his arrest. Pond has been sent a summons to appear April 1 before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw for a preliminary hearing.

Mindy Marie Hobbie, 35, of Sayre, by Athens Borough police, on Feb. 23, on Susquehanna Street in Athens. Hobbie has also been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to keep right and failure to use required position and method of turning. A blood alcohol test revealed that Hobbie's blood alcohol content was .16 percent on the day of her arrest. Hobbie has been sent a summons to appear April 1 before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw for a preliminary hearing.

Unlicensed operation charge

A Waverly man was recently arrested by Tioga County, N.Y. sheriff's deputies on a charge of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

According to information from the sheriff's office, Keith D. Pond, 48, was also charged with failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to change address.

Police said Pond was charged following a vehicle stop on Ellis Creek Road in Barton. Pond was issued tickets to appear March 18 in Barton Town Court.

Woman jailed for retail theft

An Elmira, N.Y. woman was recently incarcerated by Athens Township police on a charge of retail theft.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Angela Ann Smith, 36, was arrested March 5 after police said she attempted to return $666 worth of clothing, jewelry and perfume items to the Peebles store on Elmira Street.

Police said Smith attempted to return the items without having paid for them. Some of the items still had security tags on them, police said.

Smith was arraigned March 5 and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail. Smith's preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 18.

Unauthorized charges

State police are investigating the report of fraudulent charges made to the checking account of a Tuscarora Twp. resident on Feb. 27 at approximately 11:35 a.m. from a retail store in Bristol.

Police said the victim is a 39-year-old female.

Weapons charge

MOUNT CARMEL - A borough man was jailed on weapons charges after violating a protection from abuse order Feb. 28.

Adam M. Hendricks 34, of 223 E. Avenue, was taken into custody for violating a protection from abuse order, according to a report filed by Police Cpl. David Donkochik.

While being placed in custody, Hendricks told the officers he had three knives in his front pockets, police said.

The knives were spring-loaded and serrated, police said. Two knives had hooked blades which are exposed by spring-assisted mechanisms, police said.

Hendricks was arraigned Thursday on three counts of possession of an offensive weapon and placed in Northumberland County Prison on $10,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 12.

False ID

MOUNT CARMEL - Kevin D. Mashburn, 35, of 308 Lower Mulberry St., Danville, was charged with giving false identification to law enforcement authorities and criminal trespass following an incident near S.O.S. Metals on Route 54 Feb. 23.

Mount Carmel Township Police said Mashburn was found on Susquehanna Coal Company grounds without permission to be there. He provided police with a fake name and a fake telephone number, police said.

The charges were filed with Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones, of Mount Carmel, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 2.

Copper stolen

ROCKEFELLER TOWNSHIP - State police at Stonington reported someone entered a building at 197 Plum Creek Road, Rockefeller Township, owned by Safeguard Property Services, Bloomsburg, after damaging a window sometime between Feb. 17 and March 4. Once inside, the person removed several pieces of copper piping.

Firearms violation

SUNBURY - State police at Stonington charged Barry Lee Michael, 58, of 141 Hart St., Shamokin, with a firearms violation after an incident at Geiser Guns, Sunbury, Nov. 15.

Police said Michael attempted to purchase a shotgun but was denied when an instant background check indicated a protection from abuse order has been filed against Michael.

The charge was filed with Magisterial District Judge Benjamin Apfelbaum, of Sunbury.

Charges waived

MOUNT CARMEL - Daniel J. Renn, 32. of 116 E. Melrose St., Marion Heights, waived charges of driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and two traffic violations during a preliminary hearing Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones, of Mount Carmel.

Renn was charged by Mount Carmel Township Police Patrolman Kelly Campbell following a traffic chase which began on Natalie Mountain at 10:46 p.m. Nov. 6.

He was ordered to appear for a court arraignment at the Northumberland County Courthouse, Sunbury, Monday, April 7, when he can plead either guilty or no contest, or seek a trial by pleading not guilty.
