Pot found

COAL TOWNSHIP - A routine parole check led to drug charges being filed against Jamarl R. Brunson, 33, of 1150 Pulaski Ave.

Parole Agents Susan Stout and Kurt Hausammann were at Brunson's home at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 26 when a small amount of marijuana, tin foil used for smoking the substance and an empty syringe were allegedly discovered inside his bedroom.

Brunson admitted to having smoked marijuana but told police the syringe wasn't his, according to a criminal complaint.

He was taken into custody and is charged by Patrolman Chris Lapotsky with possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Theft at Walmart

COAL TOWNSHIP - Two Mount Carmel men are accused of stealing a computer monitor, pet food and groceries at 5:45 p.m. Jan. 29 from Walmart Supercenter, Route 61.

Destry A. Cavada, 27, of 412 W. Fig St., Mount Carmel, and Shane M. Perez, 22, of 215 E. Buick St., Mount Carmel, are each charged by Patrolman Matthew Hashuga with retail theft and conspiracy to commit retail theft.

The merchandise is valued at $355.12.

Hit and run

COAL TOWNSHIP - Victor Rutkowski, 59, of 1634 Tioga St., said his 2006 Nissan Frontier was struck by a hit-and-run driver while it was parked in front of his home between Saturday and Monday.

The pickup truck sustained damaged to its passenger-side rear bumper, wheel well and fender.

Anyone with information is asked to call Coal Township police at 570-644-0333.

Bad check

SHAMOKIN - An Ashland woman is charged with passing a bad check at a city business this month.

Beth Ann Weikel, 31, of 877 Mountain Road, Ashland, is accused of writing a $567.56 check March 6 from a closed bank account for merchandise at Wedgetown Crafts, 419 E. Sunbury St. She is charged by Patrolman Shane Mowery with theft by deception, bad checks and receiving stolen property.

Card swiped

SHAMOKIN - Two men are accused of stealing a debit card from a friend and withdrawing hundreds of dollars from an ATM without her knowledge.

Gerald Lee Bojanac, 26, of 405 E. Sunbury St., Apt. 2-2, Shamokin, and Kenneth Elliott Jr., 24, of 1222 W. Willow St., Coal Township, are charged by Patrolman William Zalinski with access device fraud, criminal conspiracy, theft and receiving stolen property.

Police said surveillance footage from a Shamokin ATM showed Bojanac making a $100 withdrawal and Elliott making two withdrawals totaling $300 between midnight and 4 a.m. Jan. 12 using a bank card belonging to Jennifer Sands.

Sands believed they took her card while they were together with friends at a fire company bar, according to a criminal complaint.

Prior to the alleged theft incident, Sands told police she had once allowed Bojanac to use her bank card and pin number to retrieve money from an ATM, and that Elliott was there when that request was made.

Two charged with selling marijuana

Two people were arrested by state police recently on suspicion of selling marijuana to a confidential informant.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark, Tyrone Eugene Garnett, 22, and Tahmir Alsawab Hammond, 23, both of Towanda, have each been charged with criminal conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance; and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. In addition, Garnett has been charged with criminal use of a communication facility; while Hammond has been charged with use of or possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia.

Garnett is accused of having contacted the confidential informant on Feb. 19 via cell phone, and arranged to sell the informant a quantity of marijuana. The next day, the report continued, Hammond communicated via cell phone to the confidential informant, in which a deal was made to sell more marijuana. Police said the informant was dropped off near the suspects' residence on the days in question with pre-recorded currency, and returned each time with a substance that tested positive as marijuana.

On Feb. 21, according to the report, police executed a search and arrest warrant at the suspects' address, and took them into custody. During the investigation, police said, it was determined that both Garnett and Hammond were on parole, and both were wanted for fleeing from a half-way house.

Both were arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark, who ordered the two incarcerated in lieu of $25,000 apiece.

Woman accused of corruption

A Towanda woman has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark to answer a charge of corruption of a minor.

According to information filed at Clark's office, Amanda L. Talada, 36, has also been charged with firearm ownership - duty of other persons. Talada has been accused by Towanda police of permitting a juvenile to sell a Glock Model 21 pistol. Although Talada contended the juvenile had received the pistol from his deceased grandfather's estate, the report said, subsequent investigation by Towanda police through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives revealed that it had been stolen from a parked vehicle a few months earlier.

Talada is scheduled to appear before Judge Clark on March 26.

Man charged with assaulting juvenile

A Monroeton man was cited by state police recently on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child.

According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark, Erik James Bartholomew, 25, has also been charged with simple assault. Bartholomew is accused of striking and injuring a young juvenile male in the left eye in November, bruising it in the process. In addition, Bartholomew is also charged with striking the juvenile with a stick on his rear thigh, injuring him there as well.

Bartholomew is scheduled to appear before Judge Clark on March 28.

Woman faces theft charge

A Towanda woman has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Tim Clark to answer a charge of theft by unlawful taking.

According to information filed in Clark's office, Donna M. Ritzel, 40, was cited by Towanda police for the above offense following an investigation conducted back in January. At that time, according to reports, Sergeant David Lantz spoke with Giovanni Mignano, who informed him that Ritzel had withdrawn $367 from his business account when she was not authorized to do so.

Ritzel's preliminary hearing has been scheduled for March 26 before Judge Clark.

Woman charged with possession

A Towanda woman was cited by state police recently on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Man shoved, struck

SHAMOKIN - Devon Smith, 28, of 442 S. Franklin St., will be cited for disorderly conduct and harassment after an incident at Rock and Spurzheim streets at 8:56 p.m. Thursday.

City police Patrolman Raymond Siko II said Smith allegedly shoved and struck Jeff Rama, 20, of 1028 W. Lynn St., Coal Township, several times.

Pedestrian struck

BUTLER TOWNSHIP - State police at Frackville are looking for the driver who injured a Lost Creek man in a hit-and-run accident at 7:50 p.m. Thursday along Route 54 just west of the West Mahanoy Township line.

Police said Jesse Coolbaugh, 19, was walking east along the highway while an unknown vehicle approached from behind. The vehicle struck Coolbaugh, knocking him down. The driver left the scene, police said.

Coolbaugh suffered injuries to his knees, hands, neck and face, but was able to walk a quarter-mile to his home before collapsing. He was transported to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, for treatment.

Hit and run

GIRARDVILLE - State police at Frackville are labeling their investigation into a pickup truck crash from 8:15 p.m. Thursday near here as a hit-and-run.

Police said a 2000 Mazda was traveling west when the driver, Joseph Polaconis, 26, of Shenandoah, lost control of the vehicle and it went off the west side of the road and struck a utility pole.

Despite the truck having right side body, wheel and suspension damage, police said Polaconis drove the vehicle to Girardville, where it was discovered during a Girardville police patrol.

Polaconis suffered a bloody nose. A passenger, a 3-year-old boy, was in a car seat and uninjured.

The vehicle's airbag deployed, police said.
