Man faces felony charge after Ulster crash

An Owego, N.Y., man faces a second-degree felony charge that stems from a recent motor vehicle accident in Ulster Township.

Theodore Darrow Hayes, 68, has been charged with the second-degree felony of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, police said.

Hayes had been driving a 2008 Ford Focus sedan on U.S. Route 220 at approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday when the vehicle left the roadway and overturned, police said.

A passenger in the vehicle, Michael Duane Blakeman, was seriously injured, according to the state police at Towanda.

The aggravated assault by vehicle charge was filed because Hayes had, as a result of driving under the influence, negligently caused Blakeman's serious injuries, police said.

Hayes exhibited signs of alcohol intoxication and told police that he had drunk eight or nine beers, according to a court document that the state police filed in Towanda District Court.

Hayes was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on roadways laned for traffic, and careless driving, police said.
