Police Briefs

Duo found with marijuana

April Marie Halstead, 32, of Laceyville and Michael Edward Walter, 50, of Wyalusing have recently been charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia relating to a Sept. 5 incident on Spring Hill Road in Tuscarora Township.

The arrest comes after a Bradford County Sheriff's Deputy attempted to serve Walter with a civil document and found the two smoking marijuana in a vehicle.

Police said both individuals claimed ownership of the marijuana that was found. Walter stated that he brought a "joint" and Halstead said a bag of marijuana found in the car was hers.

Halstead and Walter have been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Fred Wheaton on Oct. 1 for a preliminary hearing.

Man charged with theft

Darrell Dennis Mosier, 25, of Rome has been charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition and receiving stolen property relating to a Sept. 13 incident at D&R Steel in Wysox Township.

According to police, Mosier stole a golf cart from D&R Steel property and sold it on Sept. 15 for $600. The golf cart was found by police and returned to the owner on Sept. 17, police said.

Mosier was arraigned on Sept. 17 by Magisterial District Judge Fred Wheaton and released on $2,500 unsecured bail.

Mosier has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Oct. 15 before Judge Wheaton.

DUI Charges

The following people were recently charged with driving while under the influence in Bradford County:

Gerald Richard Vanderpool, 53, of Rome, by state police, on Aug. 3, on French Road in Litchfield Township.

Vanderpool was also charged with driving without proper registration and careless driving.

A blood test revealed that on the night of his arrest Vanderpool had a blood alcohol content of .16 percent.

Vanderpool has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Fred Wheaton on Nov. 12 for a preliminary hearing.

Criminal mischief

TREVORTON - Brent Bartholomew, of Trevorton, was cited for criminal mischief by state police at Stonington following an incident at 932 W. Coal St., at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Police reported that Bartholomew allegedly broke the screen of a laptop computer owned by Kirsten Wynn, of Trevorton, during the incident. The computer is valued at approximately $400 and the citation was filed with Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III of Shamokin.

Abandoned vehicle

SHAMOKIN - Brandon A. Franzyshen, 22, of 715 N. Vine St., Apt. A, Shamokin, was cited by Patrolman Mark Costa for violating the city's abandoned vehicle ordinance relating to an Aug. 28 incident on Eighth Street near Lincoln Street.

Police said Franzyshen's vehicle had an expired registration and inspection.

Harassment

SHAMOKIN TOWNSHIP - Timothy D. Alexander, 34, of 3930 Route 61, Sunbury, was charged with harassment following an altercation at his residence at 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

State police at Stonington say Alexander allegedly struck the victim, James E. Buckles, 43, of 27 Johns St., Sunbury, on the face with a closed fist.

The charge was filed with Magisterial District Judge Benjamin J. Apfelbaum of Sunbury.

Fight charges

SHAMOKIN - Timothy M. Nye, 29, of 52 S. First St., Coal Township, was cited by Cpl. Darwin Tobias III for harassment and disorderly conduct involving a fight at 11:05 p.m. Wednesday at the Home Plate, 4 S. Second St.

Debit card fraud

SUNBURY - Cynthia Lee Header, 67, of Comfort Road, Sunbury, reported to state police at Stonington that at approximately 5 p.m. Sept. 16, several charges were made on her Visa debit card without her permission or knowledge.

Endangers children

RALPHO TOWNSHIP - Dawn M. McCann, 36, and her brother, Kenneth D. Baylis, 46, both of 228 W. Walnut St., Shamokin, were charged by Patrolman Christopher Grow with endangering the welfare of children and public drunkenness involving a fight at 3:40 a.m. Friday in the parking lot at Sheetz on South Market Street in Elysburg.

Baylis also was charged with failing to have a 3-year-old child restrained in a car seat while McCann was charged with disorderly conduct.

Drug charges

RALPHO TOWNSHIP - Charges of criminal mischief, possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia were filed by Patrolman Christopher Grow against Jarred S. Derck, 29, of Ashland, relating to a March 29 incident at Miller's Gas and Oil along Route 61 at Weigh Scales.

Police reported Derck kicked a rear door at the business and was found in possession of six bags of heroin, syringes and packing for heroin.

Assault

KULPMONT - Vincent T. Crosby, 49, of 702 Spruce St., Kulpmont, was charged by Patrolman Patrick McAndrew with aggravated assault, simple assault, two counts of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and harassment involving a domestic disturbance at 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

Upon responding to the disturbance involving Crosby and his wife, Helena, police said the defendant became combative and had to be handcuffed after approaching McAndrew in an aggressive manner. Police said Vincent Crosby also kicked McAndrew in the left side of the jaw as the officer was waiting for assistance.

Explorer hits tree

MIFFLIN TOWNSHIP - Steven K. Glick, 21, of Dornsife, escaped injury early Monday morning when a 2004 Ford Explorer he was driving crashed into a tree along Shippen Dam Road near Boyer Road in this Dauphin County township.

State police at Lykens reported Glick was traveling east at 12:26 a.m. at approximately 70 miles per hour when he lost control of his vehicle, causing it to crash into a tree.

Police said Glick was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested. He also was cited for driving at an unsafe speed.

Emergency personnel from Berrysburg Fire Department and Upper Dauphin assisted at the scene.

Police Briefs

Equipment stolen in Monroe Township

Someone recently stole a red Troy-Built riding lawnmower from the back yard of a residence in the 800 block of Heath Hill Road in Monroe Township, police said.

The residence is owned by Michael Yencha of Wilkes-Barre, police said.

The thief or thieves also stole a forest green 2001 Yamaha ATV and a Cornell log splitter from a storage shed on the property, police said.

The thefts occurred sometime between Sept. 18 and Sept. 20, state police said.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the state police at Towanda at (570) 265-2186.

Towanda man charged with theft

John W. Vanderpool, 53, of Towanda is accused of illegally entering an RV camper along James Street in North Towanda Township and stealing a bottle of vodka from the camper, police said.

After drinking the vodka, Vanderpool laid down on a front porch of a residence near the camper, police said.

The incident occurred on Sept. 17, state police at Towanda said.

Vanderpool, who lives on South Main Street, was charged with illegally entering a structure used for overnight accommodations, resisting arrest, theft from a motor vehicle, and public drunkenness, police said.

New Albany man charged with forgery

Matthew Patrick Gay, 22, of New Albany is accused of stealing three checks from his stepfather, 43-year-old David Allen of New Albany, police said.

Gay then forged the checks and cashed them, police said. The total amount of the three forged checks was $1,025, police said.

Gay is also accused of stealing a check in New York state, forging it in the amount of $100, and passing it to a Sayre woman in exchange for cash, police said.

Gay was charged with four counts of forgery, state police said.

Gay was arraigned on Sept. 20. His bail was set at $5,000.

DUI charges

The following people were recently charged with driving while under the influence in Bradford County:

Melanie Ray McGuire, 48, of Sayre, by Athens Township police, on Sept. 13, on Wilawana Road in Sayre. McGuire has also been charged with disorderly conduct and defiant trespassing. McGuire refused to submit to a blood alcohol test to determine her blood alcohol content. McGuire has been sent a summons to appear Nov. 5 before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw for a preliminary hearing.

Michael Kohler, 41, of Waverly, by Sayre Borough police, on Sept. 8, on North Lehigh Avenue in Sayre. A blood alcohol test revealed that Kohler's blood alcohol content was .19 percent on the day of his arrest. Kohler has been sent a summons to appear Nov. 12 before Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw for a preliminary hearing.

Drug paraphernalia charge

Athens Borough police recently incarcerated a man on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Christopher William Allen, 19, was found to be in possession of a water bong, a soda can containing several holes and burnt marijuana residue and a marijuana grinder during an Aug. 30 welfare check at a South Elmira Street residence. Police said Allen was homeless at the time of his arrest.

Allen was arraigned Sept. 19 and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail. Allen's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 1.

Two charged in Sayre

Sayre Borough police recently filed charges against two people following a Sept. 17 incident in the borough.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Harry E. Smith, 41, of Athens, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said Erica Christine Coolbaugh, 23, of Sayre, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a prohibited offensive weapon.

Police said an officer had made an unrelated traffic stop at about 10 p.m. Sept. 17 in the parking lot of the Dandy Mini Mart on Spring Street when a Ford truck operated by Smith attempted to exit the lot in an area blocked by the patrol vehicle.

Police said the officer walked over to the truck to notify Smith the stop would be complete shortly when he noticed a hypodermic needle and snort tube in the vehicle. A search of Coolbaugh's purse following her arrest turned up six other needles, metal spoons, cotton balls, matches, alcohol wipes and a spring-assisted knife, police said.

According to police, Coolbaugh later told police that the two had snorted bath salts in the parking lot prior to the arrest.

Smith and Coolbaugh are both scheduled to appear at preliminary hearings Nov. 5.

Woman arrested for heroin possession

A Barton, N.Y. woman was recently charged with possession of a controlled substance by Sayre Borough police.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Johanna Elaine Graham, 29, was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said Graham was found to be in possession of a bindle of heroin, hypodermic needles, cotton balls, a rubber band, glass pipes and several other items of drug paraphernalia during investigation into a Sept. 3 domestic disturbance at a Tioga Street residence.

Graham's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 5.

Athens man charged

Sayre Borough police recently charged an Athens man with possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to papers filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Casey J. Voorhees, 24, was also charged with operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Police said Voorhees was found to be in possession of hypodermic needles, a cap and a digital scale after being stopped at a checkpoint May 26 on Spring Street.

Voorhees' preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 5.

Waverly police investigating incident

The Waverly Police Department recently received reports of an alleged incident or incidents of unwanted physical contact reported to have occurred at Waverly Middle School, according to a release from the department.

The alleged incident or incidents occurred between middle school students on school property, police said. Police are taking statements and interviewing those involved, according to police. Investigation into the incident continues.

Connecticut woman arrested

A Connecticut woman was recently arrested by Tioga County, N.Y. sheriff's deputies on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child.

According to information from the sheriff's office, Amy L. Guilford, 43, of Enfield, Conn., was also charged with criminal trespass.

Police said Guilford entered a residence Aug. 7 on State Route 17C in Barton and remained at the residence without permission.

Guilford will appear in Barton town court at a later date, police said.

Simple assault charge

A Sayre man was recently incarcerated by borough police on a charge of simple assault.

According to information filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael Shaw, Robert William Pracht, 44, was also charged with harassment, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

Police said Pracht choked and punched a female victim during a Sept. 24 domestic dispute at a borough residence.

Pracht was arraigned Sept. 24 and remanded to the Bradford County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. Pracht's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 1.

Man steals cell phone

James Vincent Barlow, 47, of Columbia Crossroads was recently charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition relating to a Sept. 2 incident at Blue House Pizza on State Route 6 in Wysox Township.

According to police, Barlow stole a black AT&T cell phone belonging to an employee of the business.

Barlow has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Fred Wheaton on Nov. 5 for a preliminary hearing.

Woman steals $2700 from previous employer

Alicia Mae Pedro, 34, of Mildred has been charged with forgery and theft by unlawful taking or disposition relating to a Aug. 27 incident at C&N Bank on State Route 6 in Wysox Township.

According to police, Pedro had previously been employed by C&P Trucking LLC, and used a company check to withdraw $2700 from the business' bank account. Pedro forged a signature of a person who she knew to be currently employed with C&P Trucking, police said.

Pedro has been sent a summons to appear before Magisterial District Judge Fred Wheaton on Nov. 12 for a preliminary hearing.

Cruelty to animals

DELAWARE TOWNSHIP - A Watsontown man was charged with cruelty to animals following the shooting of a dog at a home at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday.

State police at Milton reported Wayne M. Vanblargan, 69, of 7340 State Route 54, Watsontown, noticed a German Shepherd dog, owned by Shawn and Kristy McNett, of Watsontown, on his property and approached the dog. According to police, Vanblargan was standing 15 feet from the dog and fired two rounds from a .22 caliber rifle, fatally wounding the dog, a family pet.

The charges were filed with Senior Magisterial District Judge Richard Cashman's office in Milton.

'Suspicious' death of dog investigated in Towanda

The Towanda Borough police said they are investigating the suspicious death of a dog, which occurred Monday in the 400 block of Third Street in the borough.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Towanda Borough Police at (570) 265-2522.

Anyone who provides information will remain anonymous, the Towanda police said in a press release that they issued about the incident.

Burglary occurs at Wysox Twp. eatery

State police said they are trying to determine the identities of the individuals who committed a burglary at the Original Italian Pizza restaurant on U.S. Route 6 in Wysox Township.

The burglars stole a total of $240 from the building, state police said.

The incident occurred sometime between 9 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. Monday, state police said.

TAYLOR POLICE: Officers responded to 85 calls between Sept. 16-22.

On Sept. 16, officers were dispatched to a home on Little League Boulevard to investigate a threats complaint. A reported assault sent officers to a home in the 100 block of Union Street. Officers were dispatched to the Pennstar Bank on Main Street to investigate a reported fraud issue.

On Sept. 17, officers were dispatched to investigate a property theft complaint in the 100 block of South Main Street. A reported theft of an all-terrain vehicle sent officers to the 300 block of Cooper Street. Officers also investigated a theft complaint in the 500 block of West Hospital Street.

On Sept. 18, officers were dispatched to investigate a threats complaint in the 100 block of Middle Street. Officers conducted a traffic stop in the 400 block of North Main Street. One person was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) and possession of a controlled substance. Officers also responded to investigate a report of an erratic driver on Davis Street.

On Sept. 19, officers were dispatched to investigate a domestic dispute in a home in the 200 block of Tamworth Drive. Officers conducted a traffic stop on North Main Street. The driver was arrested for DUI. Officers also responded to investigate a report of a suspicious person in the 1000 block of Loomis Avenue.

On Sept. 20, officers were dispatched to investigate a report of an attempted break in in the 100 block of East Grove Street. A littering complaint sent officers to South Keyser Avenue.

On Sept. 21, officers were dispatched to investigate a report of public drunkenness at the Walmart on Main Street. A report of criminal mischief and terroristic threats sent officers to the 600 block of Union Street. Officers also responded to investigate a reported motor vehicle accident on South Pond Street.

Juvenile's cell phone stolen in Stevens Twp.

State police said an unknown actor stole a 17-year-old female's cell phone while she was sleeping at a residence on State Route 1012 in Stevens Township. Police said the theft occurred on Nov. 10 between the hours of 3 a.m. to 8 a.m..

Mailbox damaged in Windham Twp.

State police said a mailbox was damaged at the edge of a driveway sometime between the night of Nov. 9 and the morning of Nov. 10 on the 1600 block of Buck Road in Windham Township.

Burglary reported

State police at Towanda said a burglary took place sometime between noon Oct. 26 and 7:30 a.m. Oct. 27 at Cummings Lumber on Route 14 in Troy Township.

Police said someone damaged the front door and window to an office building to make entry, and then fled the scene in an unknown direction by unknown means. Nothing was stolen from inside the building.

Burglary investigated

State police at Towanda said they are investigating a burglary that took place sometime between 11 a.m. Nov. 2 and 3 p.m. Nov. 3 on Southside Road in Leroy Township.

Police said the victim was a 65-year-old Canton woman and no suspects can be linked to the investigation at this time.

Runaway reported

State police at Towanda said a 17-year-old male from Roaring Run Road in South Creek Township has been reported as a runaway, and an investigation is ongoing.

Shot investigated

State police at Towanda said they are investigating an incident in which a projectile round was shot through the cottage of a 77-year-old Springfield woman sometime between Sept. 2-12 on Lake Shore Lane in Springfield Township.

Canton man charged with felons not to possess a firearm

Stanley Benson Butler, 43, of Canton has been charged with felons not to possess a firearm, simple assault, recklessly endangering, terroristic threats, and harassment, police said.

The charges stem from an Oct. 27 incident in which Butler threatened a 22-year-old male and a 45-year-old female, and fired a 20-gauge shotgun off while in their presence, police said.

The incident occurred in Canton Township, state police at Towanda said.

Butler was arraigned on Oct. 28 by Towanda Magisterial District Judge Timothy Clark. Butler was then sent to the Bradford County jail in lieu of bail.

Butler's preliminary hearing, which was originally scheduled for Nov. 6 in Troy District Court, has been postponed to Nov. 13.

Dushore man faces drug, DUI charges

Darin Scott Kohl, 45, of Dushore has been charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana for personal use, possession of drug paraphernalia, DUI, and careless driving, court records show.

The charges stem from an Oct. 17 incident in which Kohl showed signs of intoxication at a regulatory traffic checkpoint on Railroad Street in Dushore, police said.

Kohl, who failed field sobriety tests, was arrested at the checkpoint, state police at Laporte said.

During a search of Kohl, a small amount of marijuana and a metal pipe containing a suspected marijuana residue were located in his jacket, police said.

Kohl must face the charges at a Dec. 3 preliminary hearing in Laporte District Court.

One hurt

WEST CHILLISQUAQUE TOWNSHIP - A Milton man was injured in a one-vehicle crash at 2:40 a.m. Friday along Sodom Road near Industrial Park Road.

State police at Milton report a 1997 Honda Prelude, driven by Shawn A. Savidge, 28, of Milton, was traveling east on Sodom Road when it traveled into the oncoming lane while negotiating a turn. Savidge lost control of the vehicle and traveled across the eastbound lane and off the roadway.

The rear of the vehicle struck a utility pole and rolled, coming to rest on its wheels about 40 feet from the pole. Savidge suffered a minor injury and was transported to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, for further evaluation. Police said an investigation continues.

LEWISBURG - Nicole D. Drumheller, 40, of Sunbury, was cited by state police at Milton for harassment for allegedly striking Leanna M. Gingrich, 42, of Winfield, at 2:43 a.m. Monday in the emergency room at Evangelical Community Hospital.

Disorderly conduct

SHAMOKIN - Cpl. Darwin Tobias III cited Lawrence J. Day, 21, of 220 N. Vine St., Shamokin, for disorderly conduct in connection with an altercation Day had with two females at 2:10 a.m. Nov. 2 in the first block of East Independence Street.

Deer causes accident

DEER LAKE - An Ashland woman was not injured in a one-vehicle crash at 6:25 p.m Sunday on Route 61 near Chestnut Ridge Drive in Deer Lake, Schuylkill County.

State police at Schuylkill Haven report a 2009 GMC Envoy, driven by Kathleen D. Rogers, 62, of Ashland, was traveling north on Route 61 through a single-lane construction zone. At that time, a deer entered the lane from the east berm. Rogers swerved to the left to avoid the deer and impacted the concrete barrier between the north and south lanes.

Following impact, Rogers was able to continue down the hill and pull onto the east berm away from traffic. She was not injured, but the vehicle has to be towed from the scene.

SHAMOKIN - A 14-year-old Shamokin girl and her 15-year-old brother were cited by Patrolman First Class William Miner for harassment for allegedly shouting and cursing at neighbors in the 100 block of North Marshall Street at 7:45 p.m. Saturday.

Harassment

SHAMOKIN - Aaron M. Bixler, 24, of 921 N. Washington St., Shamokin, was cited by Cpl. Bryan Primerano for harassment for allegedly swerving his vehicle at Tracy Coleman, 35, of 311 W. Pine St., Shamokin, at 4:55 p.m. Friday at Sunbury and Shamokin streets.

Ordinance violations

SHAMOKIN - Cpl. Bryan Primerano has cited Jhoel Leonardo, of Richmond Hill, N.Y., and Ola A. Adedji, of 204-206 W. Mulberry St., Shamokin, for violating a public nuisance ordinance.

Police said Leonardo's property at 625 E. Commerce St. and Adedji's home are collapsing and have materials falling from them.

Both citations were issued Tuesday.

Steals car

M0UNT CARMEL - Robert Powers, 28, of 339 E. Seventh St., Mount Carmel, was arraigned Tuesday by Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones on charges of theft, receiving stolen property and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Patrolman Justin Drumheller, Powers, who was a front-seat passenger in a silver 1999 Saturn owned by Fred Scherr, is accused of stealing the car at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday when Scherr stopped the vehicle in the 300 block of South Turnpike Street to put water in the radiator as coolant.

Police stopped Powers a short time later at Seventh and Beech streets and took him into custody.

Powers was committed to Northumberland County Prison in Sunbury in lieu of $50,000 bail.
