- Jerry Barrett, 64, Hawley, 90 days to six months in the Pike County Correctional Facility, $1,500 fine and 18-month driver's license suspension for DUI on Dec. 31, 2012, in Palmyra Twp.

- Frank Palma, 67, Scranton, two to 12 months in Pike County Correctional Facility and $500 fine for invasion of privacy between May and June 2002 in Palmyra Twp.

- Amerigus Laude Jr., 24, Equinunk, one to 23½ months in the Wayne County Correctional Facility, a drug and alcohol evaluation, 100 hours of community service and $250 for a DNA sample for distributing or selling a noncontrolled substance on Sept. 11, 2012, in Texas Twp.

- Thomas W. Helman Jr., 25, Gouldsboro, one to 36 months in the Wayne County Correctional Facility, $300 fine, a mental health evaluation and an anger management program for terroristic threats on Sept. 21 in Lehigh Twp.

VSP announces new bureau director

RICHMOND - Effective Dec. 25, Major George L. Daniels Jr., was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Bureau Director of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Field Operations (BFO). Daniels takes the place of retiring Lt. Colonel Eugene A. Stockton who has served as the BFO Bureau Director for the past decade.

Daniels, a Charlotte County native, joined the Virginia State Police in 1973. Upon graduation from the State Police Academy, his first patrol assignment as a Trooper was South Hill. As he progressed through the ranks, Daniels was assigned to the Appomattox BFO Division Headquarters in Appomattox, the Lynchburg Area Office, the Vansant Area Office, and Charlottesville Area Office. In 1993, he was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the Personnel Division and then transferred to the Training Division to serve as second in command of the Academy. In 2000, he achieved the rank of captain and served as the Division Commander for the Criminal Intelligence Division in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). As captain, he also served at the Chesapeake BFO Division Headquarters and later as the Promotional Administrator in the Department's Bureau of Administrative and Support Services (BASS). Daniels was promoted to major in 2005 with his appointment to the position of BFO Deputy Director.

Daniels, 62, is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) having earned a bachelor's degree in administration of justice and a master's degree in criminal justice administration. He is also a graduate of the Police Administration Training Program at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., the Commonwealth Management Institute (CMI) and the Virginia Executive Institute (VEI). He has also received more than 45 commendations and recognitions during his tenure with state police to include the American Red Cross Lifesaving Award, the American Legion Citation of Meritorious Service, and a Virginia State Police Superintendent's Award of Merit.

"Lt. Colonel Daniels' impeccable background, 40 years of invaluable experience and service to the Commonwealth, and extraordinary dedication to his mission as a state police employee make him more than qualified and deserving of this appointment," said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent. "We also extend our sincere appreciation to Lt. Colonel Stockton for his 37 years with the Department, and commend him for his esteemed leadership and accomplishments achieved during the course of his state police and military careers."

Retiring Jan. 1, Lt. Colonel Stockton, 64, concludes a distinguished career of accommodations and firsts. Stockton joined the Virginia State Police in 1975. During his 37 years with the Department, he has served in many capacities including Training Officer at the Academy and Director of the Professional Standards Unit (PSU). Over the years, he was also assigned to the Department's Recruitment Unit and served as first sergeant of the Buckingham Area Office. His first patrol assignment as a trooper was in Richmond. With Stockton's appointment to lieutenant colonel in 2003, he became the Department's first African-American to achieve the executive-level rank. He also became state police's first African-American Division Commander when appointed in 2000 to the rank of captain of the PSU.

Stockton has associate's degrees from John Tyler Community College and St. Leo's University. He also graduated St. Leo's University with a bachelor's degree in criminology and VCU with a master's degree in administration of justice. In addition to his years of service with state police, the Fluvanna County resident is retired from the Virginia Army National Guard as a Brigadier General. He served for seven years with the U.S. Marine Corps, including a combat tour in Vietnam.

The BFO Director oversees the majority of the Department's uniformed personnel and is responsible for 1,786 sworn and civilian employees. Troopers under the Director's command are responsible for patrolling over 64,000 miles of state roadways and interstate highways. In coordination with the BFO Division Commanders and other law enforcement agencies, the Director is responsible for all aspects of highway safety, traffic law enforcement, aviation support, emergency medical evacuation, crime prevention, uniform law enforcement support to local agencies, and coordination of law enforcement in civil disturbances and disasters.

Hurt in crash

ROCKEFELLER TOWNSHIP - A Shamokin woman was injured in a one-vehicle crash at 4:58 p.m. Thursday on Captain Bloom Road.

State police at Stonington reported Sheila Brophy, 29, lost control of her 2010 Chevrolet Aveo while traveling on snow-covered Captain Bloom Road. The vehicle slid off the roadway and rolled onto its roof. Brophy suffered a minor neck injury in the crash and was taken to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, for treatment.

Assault

MOUNT CARMEL - Police charged Steven Ennis, 30, of 222 S. Beech St., with simple assault and firearms violations following an altercation with another individual on North Oak Street at 3:45 a.m. Dec. 28.

Borough Police Patrolman William Adamski reported in court documents that while on patrol, he observed Ennis punch another individual twice in the 00 block of North Oak Street. After being taken into custody and searched, Ennis informed police that he was carrying a firearm in his back pocket, but was not licensed to do so because of his past criminal record.

Ennis was charged with felony counts of unlawful carry of a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, simple assault, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. He was arraigned Dec. 28 and placed in Northumberland County Prison on $10,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 8 before Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones, of Mount Carmel.

Drug charges

MOUNT CARMEL - Police charged Matthew Patrick Kern, 21, of 1139 Chestnut St., Kulpmont, and Brian B. Horan, 35, of 213 S. Oak St., Mount Carmel, with drug offenses following a stop at the 300 block of East Fifth St., at 5:53 p.m. Oct. 13.

Police reported that officers were responding to a tip that Kern, a wanted person out of Lancaster County, was residing on East Fifth Street. When they arrived on scene, they observed Kern walking over to two individuals, one of them being Horan. When searched, officers found a substance, later field-tested to be marijuana, on Kern's person. Kern then told police that he received the marijuana from Horan, who had walked away from the scene but was apprehended a few blocks away.

Both individuals were arraigned Thursday before Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones of Mount Carmel and charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were placed in Northumberland County Prison, Kern on $20,000 bail and Horan on $15,000 bail. Preliminary hearings are scheduled before Jones on Jan. 8.

Disorderly conduct

ATLAS - Mount Carmel Township Police Chief Brian Hollenbush charged Michelle L. Levengood, 23, of 105 W. Girard St., Atlas, with disorderly conduct following an incident in front at her residence at 11:15 a.m. Nov. 15.

Hollenbush reported in court documents that Levengood was yelling and cursing at police and a county children and youth caseworker so loudly that neighbors exited their homes to see what was going on.

A preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones is scheduled for Jan. 22.

Criminal mischief

DELAWARE TOWNSHIP - Donald Lynch, 50, of Montgomery, was cited for criminal mischief following an argument at the Warrior Run Fire Station at 2 p.m. Friday.

According to state police at Milton, Lynch became involved in an argument with Andrew Hartzell, 19, of Mount Carmel, over personal property. Lynch allegedly threw a microwave, clock radio and a computer printer on the ground, causing $170 in damage.

Woman injured

Melanie L. Bellis, 45, of Waverly, N.Y., was moderately injured in a one-vehicle crash at 12:50 p.m. Dec. 10 on Wallace Road in West Burlington Township, said state police at Towanda.

Police said she was traveling north, too fast for conditions, and her Kia Optima left the road on the northbound berm, after traveling over a patch of ice. It struck a tree, causing major damage to the driver's side, and came to final rest in the northbound berm, facing south. Bellis was removed from the vehicle by the Troy Fire Department and EMS and she was transported to Robert Packer Hospital, police said.

Police said she was charged for a violation of "driving vehicle at safe speed."

Man injured

State police at Towanda said Shawn R. McKusick, 24, of Troy, had a minor injury in a one-vehicle accident at 10:50 a.m. Dec. 10 on Route 6 in Burlington Township.

According to police, he was traveling west in his Dodge Durango and was going too fast for conditions on the snow-covered road. Police said he lost control of his vehicle, which left the road and hit a ditch in the eastbound berm. The vehicle overturned onto its roof and came to final rest in the eastbound berm, facing east. His passenger was not injured.

Police said McKusick was charged for a violation of the vehicle code.

Driver not injured

Bradley S. Crum, 25, of Athens, was not injured in a one-vehicle accident at 3:48 p.m. Dec. 26 on State Route 287 in Delmar Township, Tioga County, Pa., said state police at Mansfield.

Police said he was traveling south on the road, which had icy patches, and he lost traction and began to slide while traveling through a right hand curve. Police said he couldn't regain control of his Chevrolet Lumina, which slid across the northbound lane and left the east side of the road. Police said it slid for about 36 feet before the front right corner of the vehicle collided with a utility pole. Then, it began to spin in a counter-clockwise direction, with the right rear side of the vehicle colliding with a guide rail and damaging about 15 feet of guide before coming to rest, facing in a northeasterly direction.

- Assault-Aggravated: At 7:19 p.m. Dec. 28, police responded to the 200 block of N. 14th Avenue in regards to an assault. Known offender assaulted victim with fists and by kicking. Warrants obtained.

- Assault-Aggravated/Domestic: at 11:26 p.m. Dec. 27, police were called to the 3300 block of Boston Street for a reported assault. Known family members assaulted each other with fists. Both arrested.

- Burglary/Breaking and Entering/Outbuilding/Garage: At 11:51 a.m. Dec. 24, police responded to the 200 block of Boston Street for a reported burglary. Unknown offender entered shed by cutting lock and stole air conditioner unit and copper wiring.

- Burglary/Breaking and Entering/Residential: At 6:15 p.m. Dec. 23, police responded to the 3000 block of Elmwood Avenue in reference to an assault. Known offender entered residence by force, assaulted resident and was arrested.

- Burglary/Breaking and Entering/Residential: At 4 p.m. Dec. 26, police were dispatched to the 100 block of N. 14th Avenue for a reported burglary. Unknown offender entered a residence by forcing rear door and stole jewelry, silver and cash.

- Burglary/Breaking and Entering/Residential: At 11:53 p.m. Dec. 28, police responded to the 2100 block of Cloverdale Avenue for an attempted burglary. Unknown offenders attempted to enter residence by removing window screens. No entry made.

- Drug/Narcotic Violation: At 9:46 p.m. Dec. 25, police responded to the 500 block of N. 9th Avenue regarding a disturbance. While being searched due to arrest, known offender was found to be in possession of narcotics.

- Drug/Narcotic Violation: At 10:20 p.m. Dec. 26, police identified a narcotic violation in the 400 block of S. Mesa Drive. Known offenders were found to be in possession of marijuana. Petitions pending.

- Fraud-Fraud by Impersonation: At 7:58 p.m. Dec. 29, police were called to the 3300 block of Oaklawn Boulevard in reference to a suspicious subject. Known offender gave police false identifying information, attempted to flee, was found to be wanted from another jurisdiction and was arrested.

- Larceny-All Other Larceny: At 1:58 p.m. Dec. 26, police responded to the 1000 block of Elm Street for a reported larceny. Known offenders stole two bicycles from outside of business. Both bicycles were recovered. Petitions pending.

- Larceny-Shoplifting: At 8:47 p.m. Dec. 23, police responded to the 900 block of Colonial Corner Drive in reference to a larceny. Two unknown offenders stole alcohol from business.

- Larceny-Theft From Building: At 7 p.m. Dec. 27, police responded to the 700 block of W. Randolph Road for a reported larceny. Known offender stole tablet computer from residence.

- Motor Vehicle Theft/Stolen Auto: At 9:55 p.m. Dec. 26, police responded to the 2300 block of Oaklawn Boulevard in reference to a larceny of an auto. Unknown offender stole unlocked, running vehicle from outside of business.

- Robbery/Individual: At 5:33 p.m. Dec. 27, police responded to the 200 block of Appomattox Avenue for a reported robbery. Unknown offenders attempted to steal from victim by force but fled with nothing stolen.

- Vandalism/Damage/Destruction of Property: At 3:47 a.m. Dec. 23, police responded to the 1100 block of Pine Avenue for a reported vandalism. Known offender damaged residential door and window frame and was arrested.

- Vandalism/Damage/Destruction of Property: At 12 a.m. Dec. 27, police responded to the 2300 block of Dellrose Drive for a reported vandalism. Unknown offender damaged residential door frame.

- Vandalism/Damage/Destruction of Property: At 1 p.m. Dec. 29, police responded to the 1300 block of Stewart Avenue for a reported vandalism. Unknown offender broke vehicle window.

- Vandalism/Damage/Destruction of Property: At 9:19 p.m. Dec. 29, police responded to the 1300 block of Meadow Street for a reported vandalism. Unknown offender broke residential window by throwing a piece of asphalt.

- Weapon Law Offenses: at 1:58 a.m. Dec. 24, police responded to the 1200 block of S. 1st Avenue for a report of shots fired. Unknown offender shot into a residential building multiple times. No injuries.

- Weapon Law Offenses: At 1:37 a.m. Dec. 28, police responded to the 2700 block of Oaklawn Boulevard for a report of shots fired. Known offender fired shots, fled from the scene, tossed a firearm and was later apprehended and arrested. No injuries.

Scrap metal stolen

LITTLE MAHANOY TOWNSHIP - Kyle Lesher, of Sunbury, reported to state police at Stonington someone entered an outbuilding on his property at 964 Creek Road sometime between Dec. 30 and Jan. 1 and removed various items of scrap metal before leaving the scene.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to contact state police at 570-286-5601.

One-vehicle crash

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - A 17-year-old Herndon female was not injured in a one vehicle crash on Hooflander Road near Slutter Valley Road in Washington Township at 5:44 a.m. Saturday.

State police at Stonington say a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by the female, was negotiating a left curve in the road when she lost control under icy conditions. The Cavalier traveled off the right side of the road, through a yard and struck a tree with its front.

The female was not injured and police said that the seatbelt system and air bags were deployed. She received a written warning from police about driving too fast for conditions.

Wishing well theft

PAXINOS - Kathy Derck, of Irish Valley Road, Paxinos, reported to state police at Stonington sometime between Dec. 11 and Jan. 4, someone removed a wooden wishing well from her yard.

Vehicle rollover

ROCKEFELLER TOWNSHIP - A Sunbury woman escaped injury following a rollover crash at 11:47 a.m. Sunday on Cider Press Road, Rockefeller Township.

State police at Stonington say a 2005 Saturn Vue, driven by Alyssa G. Bingaman, 19, of Sunbury, was traveling east on Cider Press Road when she lost control of the vehicle on a patch of slush on the road surface. The Vue then spun and rolled onto its roof.

Furnace malfunction

TREVORTON - A faulty furnace caused a scare at Angie's Market along West Shamokin Street around 9 p.m. Monday.

A person called 911 and reported the sound of an "explosion" in the basement and said the building was filling with smoke. Firefighters determined that a furnace malfunction caused the sound. No damage to the building was reported.

Pickup stolen

COAL TOWNSHIP - Police are investigating the theft of a blue 1994 Chevrolet pickup from Shamokin Filler Plant.

The pickup was used as a welding vehicle and did not have a registration plate. It contained torches, a welder, welding leads, hand tools, an acetylene and oxygen tank.

The theft was reported Monday. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 570-644-0333.

Pedestrian charged after being hit by vehicle

Macee N. Raub, 22, of Milan has been charged by state police for failing to yield to a vehicle on a highway after being struck on Dec. 11 by a 2004 Jeep Wrangler on Austinville Road in Columbia Township.

According to police, Raub only received minor injuries during the incident and continued walking along the road after being struck. She was not transported by EMS, police said.

Police estimated the vehicle that struck Raub was traveling at 35 mph when she was struck.

Police search for driver who fled scene

State police are investigating a one-vehicle accident that occurred on Cotton Hollow Road in Windham Township on Jan. 4. Police said the crash happened as a vehicle travelled eastbound and for unknown reasons left the roadway and impacted a berm and chain link fence.

The driver managed to free the vehicle and fled the scene before police arrived.

No injuries in Tuscarora Twp. crash

Zach Reagan Mowry, 33, of Laceyville has been charged with failing to stay in his lane after crashing a 2005 Ford F-150 into a tree on Marbaker Road in Tuscarora Township on Sunday.

Mowry, who was uninjured during the crash, was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.

Police said he was traveling west on an icy road when he veered off the north shoulder, over an embankment and struck a tree head on.

Mowry's passenger, a 22-year-old female, suffered minor injuries during the incident and was transported to Tyler Memorial Hospital by Meshoppen EMS.

Woman faces hearing

Lori Ann Barber, 46, of South Elmer Avenue, Sayre, faces a preliminary hearing at 3:45 p.m. today before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox on a violation of the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device, and Cosmetic Act, according to court papers.

The papers note that she used, or possessed with the intent to use, drug paraphernalia, namely a red and black glass bong and several metal pipes and pieces May 22 on Galvin Road in Ridgebury Township.

According to an affidavit, police had been dispatched to a domestic disturbance at the address. Pennsylvania State Police Trooper David Kittle said that when he began to package the items that were found, Barber asked if he was going to destroy them. Noting the glass bong, she said, "those are hard to find anymore."

Wilcox said she was sent a summons by certified mail.

Man faces hearing

Matthew P. Wilbur, 38, of East Union Street, Canton, faces a preliminary hearing at 1:45 p.m. today before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy on charges of disorderly conduct - engage in fight; simple assault - attempt; careless driving; and trespass by motor vehicle - damage to real property by operation of motor vehicle prohibited, according to court papers.

The charges are for an incident that took place at 1:05 p.m. Nov. 15 at his residence.

According to an affidavit, Wilbur made an accusation against a man and struck him in the jaw with a closed fist, in anger. He also lost control of a vehicle and struck a stone pillar and cast iron fence, traveling through them and onto private property, the affidavit notes.

Wilcox said he was sent a summons by certified mail.

Woman charged with simple assault

Amber Star Smith, 30, of Berwick Turnpike, Gillett, faces a preliminary hearing at 3 p.m. Jan. 15 before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Wilcox of Troy on charges of simple assault and harassment for an Nov. 5 incident at her residence, according to court papers.

She is accused of pushing someone backwards, into an older chair, which broke, causing the victim to fall backwards into a cast iron radiator. Police said this resulted in a large laceration to the back of the victim's head.

Wilcox said she was sent a summons by certified mail.

SHAMOKIN - The following hearings took place recently before Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III. Defendants ordered to appear for plea court March 17 at Northumberland County Court, Sunbury, can plead guilty or no contest, or seek a trial by pleading not guilty.

n Ashley Header, 19, of 435 Comfort Road, Sunbury, waived chargers of growing eight marijuana plants and possession of drug paraphernalia involving a July 22 incident at a second floor apartment at 707 W. Chestnut St.

The charges were filed by Shamokin Patrolman Raymond Siko II.

n Adam Moore, 28, of 233 W. Sunbury St., Shamokin, pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and was ordered to pay a $300 fine plus costs and placed on supervised probation for nine months.

Moore was charged by Shamokin Patrolman Raymond Siko II in connection with an Oct. 8 incident at his residence in which emergency responders were called for a natural gas leak.

Rick Bozza, city code officer, previously said the home owned by Robert and Cindy Santore was deemed unfit for human habitation after animal feces, insects and garbage were found inside.

n John W. Gemberling, 24, of 711 E. Race St., Shamokin, waived to court a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol relating to a Nov. 23 traffic stop on Bear Valley Road.

Coal Township Patrolman Matthew Henrich, who filed the charge, reported Gemberling was found trying to start his truck while sitting in the vehicle naked from the waist down.

n Lelo Shingara, 46, of 311 Shingara Lane, Sunbury, waived to court two counts each of delivery of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and one count of criminal use of a communication facility in commission of a felony in connection with an April 12 incident in Shamokin.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Shamokin Cpl. Bryan Primerano, an informant advised police that Shingara had the intent to distribute controlled substances, including Percocet. Police searched the informant and supplied $15 in "police controlled buy money" before the purchase. The informant was under police supervision during the purchase and returned to the station with two Oxycodone pills and two Alprazolam pills.

n Matthew R. Davies, 24, of 230 N. Cherry St., Shamokin, waived to court two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, careless driving and a stop sign violation relating to a Nov. 6 incident.

Police said Davies was observed driving in a careless manner on North Shamokin Street before failing to stop for a stop sign at Webster and Franklin streets.

The charges were filed by Shamokin Patrolman Scott Weaver.

n Adam J. Stank, 31, of 944 W. Walnut St., Coal Township, waived to court charges of possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia relating to an Aug. 9 incident at the Fifth Street playground.

The charges were filed by Shamokin Patrolman Raymond Siko II.

n Jason R. Lebo, 28, of 206 S. Pearl St., Shamokin, waived to court charges of theft and receiving stolen property filed by Coal Township Patrolman Jason Adams.

Lebo is accused of removing $100 from the purse of customer Rita Troutman on Nov. 5 at Walmart SuperCenter along Route 61 while he was employed at the business.

n Collin Scicchitano, 18, of 1798 Clinton Ave., Coal Township, waived to court charges of carrying a firearm without a license, theft and receiving stolen property involving a Sept. 16 incident in which he was found in possession of a .257 Magnum that was stolen from the west end of Coal Township.

The charges were filed by Coal Township Detective Jeff Brennan.

n Charges of simple assault and harassment filed by Coal Township Patrolman Matthew Henrich against Bernadette Yeager, 51, of 176 Upper Excelsior Road, Excelsior, were dismissed at the conclusion of a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

The defendant was accused of pushing her husband, William Yeager, during a Dec. 14 argument at their home, causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head on an antique scale. Police said William Yeager's head was bleeding and required medical attention.

But during the hearing, William Yeager testified that his wife did not push him and that he fell on his own. He also testified that his wife called 911 for an ambulance to respond to their home. After hearing the testimony, Gembic dismissed the charges.

n John E. Reichner II, 24, of 114 S. Shamokin St., Shamokin, pleaded guilty to a summary of public drunkenness and was ordered to pay a $200 fine plus costs. An additional charge of possession of a small amount of marijuana was withdrawn.

Reichner was charged by Coal Township Patrolman Edward Purcell in connection with a Nov. 10 incident in the 1100 block of Tioga Street.

William Slusser, 42, of 132 N. Eighth St., Shamokin, pleaded guilty to three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and was ordered to pay fines totaling $600 plus costs and placed on supervised probation for 18 months. One count of possession of a small amount of marijuana was withdrawn.

The charges filed by Shamokin Cpls. Bryan Primerano and Darwin Tobias III relate to three incidents that occurred in the city between November and January.
